Harry writes, “[These are] my father Antti (Antero) Sittonen’s thoughts about the existence of a god. He wrote this on March 20, 1912 when he was 23 years old, then living in Joensuu, Finland. He had broken with the Lutheran Church which he despised as a reactionary instrument of the ruling class. My mother on her own came to the same conclusions, as they both grew up in poverty and saw the Church as an oppresive force.

“So I grew up in an atheist family and saw no reasn to become anything else. It makes perfect sense to me.”

AJATUKSIANI

SOME THOUGHTS

There must be a creature who has created everything, but who has created that wondrous creature or where did he come from? God created heaven and earth and human beings. He made everything very well, but humanity has made it even better. Didn’t God have enough brains, or was he so indolent that he didn’t bother to open his mouth again once he had made everything in a word? Why has humanity had to wrack its brains and invent all the wonders atop the earth? How come was it that God gave humans more brains than he had himself? If God is a good father to the children of his creation why has he not done everything on behalf of his children? Why has he allowed so much misery, disappointment, and suffering to visit the earth? A good father fulfills the hopes of his beloved children. An ordinary human being cannot always do what he wants; only God is all-powerful. So why should people pray to, thank and praise God? Is he so self-important, full of ambition, or a tyrant? On the contrary, it ought to be his responsibility to see that those he has created do not want, and that they don’t need to suffer from anything and to make them cheerful and happy. It is said, “He punishes humanity for its sins.” Where did such sin came from? The bible blames the serpent or the Devil. So why did he create a serpent and the devil? Why did he put people under temptation when he knew people cannot resist temptation? Why did he not give people iron will power and strength to withstand no matter what? Why did he punish humanity because of his awn egoism?
When I think about all this, I cannot believe God is almighty, merciful, and good; If there is some supernatural being it is not all-powerful or good, but a monstrous creature who enjoys in complete peace and comfort everything that happens on this earth. It doesn’t even deign to come and show itself. It just quietly allows people to wrack their brains about its existence and laughs as the wretched call to it for help completely without avail, receiving not one comforting word, not to speak of help. Who, if they only use their feeble brain in only small measure, can believe in religion, or even in the existence of a beneficent deity Certainly not I!
